How much extra would it cost to travel with a horse?

i want to take my shetland up to picnic races to do some barrel racing and pole bending as we dont have anything like that were i live

its a 10 hour drive from were i live, how much extra petrol do you use towing? How much extra would it cost to travel with a horse? It really depends on the size of the engine, how heavy the trailer is, how well-equipted for towing the vehicle is and how well the vehicle runs.

Since you are towing with a gas engine car that probably wasn't manufactured to be a tow vehicle you will most likely see a significant drop in your fuel mileage. You also need to take into consideration the wear and tear this is going to put on the car. You will be replacing your brakes more frequently, putting a lot of wear on the engine and start saving now for a new transmission if you plan on routinely towing a trailer on 10 hour trips.

Your best bet would be to invest in an actual tow vehicle like a heavy-duty truck with a tow package even if it is an older one. It will hold up to heavy use much better and you and your pony will be much safer. How much extra would it cost to travel with a horse? You do not say what type or size trailer you have, I will guess at a two horse steel BP since it is a shetland pulled by a Ford fairlaine. Weight has a lot to do with the mileage you will getting.

Assuming that you all ready know what your Ford fuel consumption is unloaded and what you are hauling is relatively small and light compared to a lot of trailers out there I would cut the consumption down by a quarter, but it you really want to be sure you are prepared you can half it.
